Lake Youngs Elementary School

Lake Young’s Elementary School is a K-6 public school offering education to nearly 500 students in King County, and is part of the Kent School District.  The multipurpose room project included adding a 4000 SF building with a kitchen and gathering area off of an already existing gymnasium.  The beautiful modern building designed by Sierra-Martin Architects includes a slightly curved front facade and archway broken up by three full window clerestories, and high ceilings supported by large wooden beams and natural light accents casting down to the floor from the accent windows above.  On the outside of the building a new storm system for the facility with retention ponds and added storm drains was installed, a masonry dumpster enclosure was constructed, the schools bus loop was revised to accommodate and expand drop off and pickup points, and the west parking lot was improved to include new sidewalks, parking stalls, and landscaped islands to support traffic flow and pedestrian safety.

This public works project took just under eleven months to complete and involved more than thirty quality subcontractors and material suppliers.  Merit self-performed the foundation concrete, framing, siding, some flashing, and some miscellaneous site concrete on the project.  Working with Sierra-Martin Architects and Kent School District was a wonderful experience, and we are very appreciative of the support of the many team members who helped turn this design into a structure that the students and staff at Lake Young’s Elementary School will be able to enjoy for many years to come.
