#lovelocal Spotlight: The Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound

The Boys & Girls Club of South Puget Sound has been working around the clock with their partners, local school districts, health care providers, health departments, government officials and other organizations to determine how they can best serve the communities they serve as a whole, as part of a systemic emergency response plan.

As part of this emergency response plan, the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound are giving those on the frontlines of service peace of mind knowing that their kids are safely cared for. They have opened Day Camp sites at no charge in Tacoma and Belfair to serve exclusively the children of first responders and medical providers. In Tacoma they are operating at their Al Davies Branch in partnership with Tacoma Public Schools and many other community organizations. Their Belfair site is operating in partnership with the North Mason School District at their North Mason Teen Center.

40 youth grades K-5th will be served at each location. The hours are 6:30 AM - 7:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with meals and snacks provided each day. Kid to staff ratios are intentionally low (8:1) to ensure safe social distancing in programs. Their healthcare partners provided medical protocols for the nurses on-site to follow, which includes screening each child and staff member when they arrive each day.

This program is a critical part of our community response to beating COVID-19. Due to this program’s heightened safety standards, the weekly cost for providing up to 65 hours of care for one child is $450.

On top of childcare, the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound is also providing free meals, Grab & GO, for children in the communities ages 18 and under Monday through Friday.

We would be so grateful if you would join Merit Construction in donating to this organization and answer this important call to service from our community. Every gift matters.
